An unusual portrait of Alexander I Balas
Lot 1026
SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Alexander I Balas, 152-145 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.40 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in the East. Diademed head of Alexander I to right. Rev. [BA]ΣIΛEΩ[Σ] / [A]ΛEΞANΔ[POY] - ΘΕΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ / [ΕΥ]ΕΡΓΕΤΟΥ Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; in exergue, uncertain monograms. SC -. An interesting issue with a very unusual portrait. Struck on a slightly short flan and with a flan crack, otherwise, good very fine.

Privately acquired from Pars Coins at New York International Numismatic Convention on 10 January 2023.

The peculiar style of the king's portrait and the rather sloppy execution of the letters on the reverse strongly indicate that this coin was produced at an uncertain eastern mint.
